Week of 12/5: Volunteer Work Day, Christmas Eve-Eve-Eve Worship

Advent Practices at Home
We started our Advent journey of preparation for Jesus’ coming at Christmas last Sunday, and Abby suggested a couple practices that people of all ages can engage at home. We have prayer cards for each day in December (contact Kristen if you would like to pick up a hard copy at the church space), and a calendar of daily practices and an examen question. Abby also shared a video.

“Servant Church Aspires” Update
What are we grateful for, in our corporate and individual lives?  What are we dreaming with God of becoming as a church?  And how can we give our gifts to help us move toward those dreams and aspirations?  We’re collecting 2017 ‘estimates of giving’ for the rest of 2016.  You may fill out the Servant Church Aspires form both at Servant Church or from your home at www.servantchurch.org/give.

We aspire that 100% of those committed to Servant Church prayerfully consider to give something financially (we happily received an estimate of $1/week).  We also aspire to support you in all of the non-financial ways you serve with your time, talents, and ideas. Talk to Dusty Harshman at langhugh@gmail.com if you have any further questions about the Servant Church Aspires series or church finances.

Evensong with Holy Communion: Sundays through Dec. 11, 5:30-6ish
Join us on Sunday evenings now through Advent for a new Servant Church worship gathering. We’ll share a simple liturgy, a few songs and readings, times of silence, and communion. By joining together to quiet ourselves, we hope to connect with God, recalibrate our spirits, and prepare for the week ahead.

There won’t be childcare, but there will be art materials. If your kids are noisy, that’s ok – Evensong will be rough around the edges anyway! Older children are encouraged to join in. If any of them would like to lead a prayer or reading, we’d be honored to hear from them. Contact Ben Wright if you have questions.

Crafting Day for Christmas Pageant: Wed. 12/7, 9:30-11am
This year at Christmas Eve service, our church’s children will be enacting a very Servant Church style Christmas Pageant, meaning unrehearsed and kids choosing their roles on the spot (so we may end up with six Marys, one shepherd, and no Joseph…and that’s ok!).

Kristen is working on collecting items to use as “costumes”. Right now she’s thinking:

  • 6-8 “robes” that could be Joseph/shepherds/wise men
  • 5-6 blue “robes” that could be Marys
  • 6-8 angel wings and halos
  • 3-4 sheep

Anyone up for crafting together come and join on Wednesday morning for all or part of the time.  Childcare will be provided.

Volunteer Work Day: Sat. 12/10, 9am-2pm
Servant Church is blessed to have our beautiful building, so we’ll work together to maintain it at our first ever Volunteer Work Day. Ross the Facilities Manager will put together a list of to-do’s, and we’ll knock out as many items as possible. Then look for more volunteer work days every three months for ongoing care of our church.

Some jobs will include cleaning out closets, hanging art, landscaping, and touch up paint. No experience needed! Bring your work gloves and tool boxes, and email Ross or RSVP on the Facebook event to let him know you’re in.

Giving Gears, a Mechanical Ministry: Sat. 12/10, 10-noon
Giving Gears – a new car care ministry – continues this month. If you need some minor car repair or maintenance, of if you’re interested in helping out, head to the church space during the church work day. All are welcome as volunteers or beneficiaries. No skills necessary!

Bring tools, jacks, and ramps if you have them. Talk to Nick Reith with any questions.

JFON Emergency Consultation Clinics:
Saturdays 12/10, & 12/17, 10am-2pm
(at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 5909 Reicher Dr.)

A coalition of attorneys are providing emergency consultation clinics to the community over the coming months. These clinics will be for anyone wondering whether they should apply for DACA during this little window or if they should renew DACA.  There will also be a “Know Your Rights” presentation.  Please feel free to invite people you know to this clinic if they have these sorts of questions.

Over 100 people are expected at these clinics and we need to provide snacks and child engagement (just like we do for our regular clinics).  Can you help? Please sign up if you are able to bring snacks, coffee, quiet games for kids, or can show up that day as a volunteer to be with children.

Parents’ Night Out: Sat. 12/10, 5:30-9pm
We’ll have childcare workers available on December 10. Drop off your children at the church and have a beautiful evening to yourselves. Feel free to invite friends who aren’t connected to Servant Church.

There’s a suggested donation of $25 for the first child and $10 for all other children, up to $40 per family. RSVP online by December 7.

Advent Mini-Life Group: Sundays 12/11 & 12/18, 9:45am-10:45am
Please join us Sunday morning as we take time to enjoy Advent. There will be an Advent reading, time for prayer, and discussion. Derek and Jessica Miller will host this informal gathering in the Chapel from 9:45-10:45am. There will be light refreshments and childcare. Questions, please feel free to contact Jessica or Valerie.

Caroling at a Nursing Home: Sun. 12/11, 3:30-6:30pm
The new Care Team – which has taken on the call of ministering to aging members of Asbury – invites everyone to join for an afternoon of caroling at 2 local nursing homes where some of those members are currently living. We’ll sing carols in the common area at West Oaks Rehab on Slaughter Lane and The Arbour at Westminster Manor on Jackson Ave. We’ll gather at 4pm at the church and carpool to the nursing homes for caroling. Questions, please contact Valerie or Jennifer Barry, or RSVP to the Facebook event.

Carols at the Cafe: Sun. 12/18, 5:30-7:30pm (Cafe at Mueller HEB)
All are invited to Servant Church’s annual Christmas “Eve-eve-eve” celebration on December 18, 5:30-7:30pm at Cafe Mueller. It will be a family-friendly celebration with drinks, Christmas story sharing, music led by the Gentle Wolves, and giving a big gift to local and global organizations. We’ll be sharing more soon about what we’ll be raising money for this Advent. RSVP to the Facebook event, and we’ll keep you in the loop.

Christmas Eve Worship: Sat. 12/24, 5:30-6:30pm

Instead of worship on Christmas Day, we’ll have a Christmas Eve service that will be a very Servant Church/Best Christmas Pageant Ever evening with a traditional worship service including lessons and Christmas carols. RSVP to the Facebook event and bring your friends; we hope to see you there!

New East + South Life Groups

We are excited to announce the addition of two new life groups:

Vision Team Nominations
The Servant Church Vision Team formed at the beginning of 2016. It is still getting established and building up to its full size. We need to add several members and replace members that are stepping down beginning in January. You can help us with this process by filling out our form to let us know who in the community you think is gifted to serve in this way.

Vision Team members need to have completed a 2016-2017 commitment card. You can do that online at servantchurchaustin.org/commitment.

“Servant Church Aspires” Update
As you may know, Servant Church collected and paraded 50 turkeys to Maplewood for deserving families to enjoy during Thanksgiving. This is the type of giving we celebrate regularly, and we should.

We should also celebrate as we aspire to support the many other missions and ministries of our church through our annual estimates of giving. To date, we have collected only 16 estimates of giving for 2017. With gratitude, we have estimates ranging from $1/week to over $1000/month. As we celebrate those gifts, we encourage the church to step forward and make your intentions known for 2017.

By the end of 2016, let’s see if we can collect and be thankful for 50 estimates of giving through Servant Church AspiresLET’S MATCH THOSE TURKEYS!

Week of 11/14: JFON Emergency Clinic, Pageant Crafting Day, Volunteer Work Day

“Servant Church Aspires” Financial Series
What are we grateful for, in our corporate and individual lives? What are we dreaming with God of becoming as a church? And how can we each give our gifts to help us move toward those dreams and aspirations? We’re collecting 2017 “estimate of giving” cards about financial giving, starting November 13. You can submit a hard copy or online at servantchurchaustin.org/give.

We aspire that 100% of those people committed to Servant Church can intentionally pray and share a plan to give something, even if that’s $10/month. And we want to support you in sharing your time, talents and ideas as well! Talk to Dusty Harshman (langhugh@gmail.com) with any questions about the “Servant Church Aspires” series or the church’s nancial status. And check out Dusty’s cool Prezi presentation online!

Charge Conference: Sun. 11/20, 3pm (1160 San Bernard 78702)
Once a year, Servant Church has a church business meeting with our United Methodist network and supervision, called a “charge conference.” If you’d like to hear more about our connection to other UMC churches, and meet other eastside UMC’s, you’re invited along with our vision team and pastors to Wesley UMC (1160 San Bernard, 78702) on Sunday 11/20 at 3pm.

Family Worship: Sun. 11/27, 11:11am
Family Sundays happen about four times a year as the church enters a new season in the liturgical calendar.  Children stay in worship the entire time instead of going to Godly Play and Actors of Light.  Supervised Play is still available from 10:45 to communion.  The goal is  to give families the opportunity to worship together and actively teach their children about the parts of worship service.  Likewise it gives all of us the opportunity to learn from children on ways to engage in worship in fresh, creative ways!

“Servant Church Aspires” Financial Series
With gratitude on Sunday, October 30th, the finance team offered a historical and modern look at our church’s financial health in the Prezi called Servant Church Aspires.  Included in the Prezi is an infographic detailing the financial health of Servant Church.  As we aspire with gratitude in the coming weeks, we’ll have this material available on paper to accompany the bulletin on Sunday.

We also posed three thoughts on Sunday, and we’ll ask you to boldly be willing to respond in next Sunday’s service. Please consider your response to the following following prompts:

  1. I am thankful for Servant Church when we…
  2. I aspire for Servant Church to…
  3. I aspire to serve our Church by…

Chase Roden started a six-week class on understanding and interpreting the Bible, at 9:30am on Sundays through November 20th. Jump in at any time! This six-week discussion class is a (re)-introduction to the Bible; it’s perfect for people without much experience reading the Bible as well as anybody who could use a bit more context in which to understand it. This class looks at the communities who wrote, preserved, and transmitted the Bible to us through history, as well as the way we interpret the Bible in light of our own communities and history. Chase has a master’s degree in biblical studies and theology from Fuller Seminary. Childcare will be provided- email Kristen to RSVP. For more info, email Chase.

If you have questions about the Bible you’d like Eric or Chase to try to address, please send them an email.

It’s Not too Late! Fill Out a Commitment Card
Part of our SC 6th birthday celebration was prayerfully submitting our commitment cards to “join” with Servant Church for the coming year. You can still submit a 2016-2017 commitment card at servantchurchaustin.org/commitment, or with a hard copy green card. We commit to the work of Servant Church and to helping each other grow as disciples by sharing commitments to specific practices – upward toward God, inward with each other, and outward toward our neighbors. We make these commitments one year at a time, so it’s a great time for new people to consider commitments with Servant Church, and for returning members to re-evaluate how those commitments have gone. Talk to Eric or Abby with questions. If you need a helpful form for remembering your commitments (this is not the form to turn in), Vision Team member Kelly Foster made this PDF.

Bless New Parents through Meal Train
Part of community is caring for each other in times of need and we’re glad to do that by bringing new parents meals. Sign up to bring a meal to the growing family of Tamara and Esayas Aklilu, who just welcomed baby Tabita with big brother Justice.

You can also still sign up to bring meals to Tom and Susie Meadows, who recently welcomed baby Michael with big brother Liam.

The neighborhood is also collecting candy for these French Place neighbors (who get hundreds of trick-or-treaters!) with a drop-off at Servant Church. Can you help us “reverse trick-or-treat” and distribute that donated candy following worship gathering on Sunday 10/30? RSVP on the Facebook event.

All Saints’ Day is the Christian celebration of “the great cloud of witnesses” – our communion with and thanksgiving for all our forefathers and foremothers in faith who went before us. If you have someone you’d like to remember and give thanks for their memory with the community – especially people who have died in the last year – please bring a photo, note, or simply be ready to share their name in our worship gathering on Sunday 11/6.

Guatemala Trip: Survey+Meeting Sun. 10/30, 1pm
Servant Church is considering taking a team to Xela, Guatemala to be in conversation and ministry with a group of entrepreneurial Methodists who would enjoy support and sharing. We would also spend time in prayer and learning about topics like migration, racism, global interconnectedness, and care for creation. In order to wonder together about this possibility, we’d like to start with a survey. Please fill this out whether or not you are interested in such a journey–we’d love to have your feedback.

If you want to know more about the tentative plan for the trip (July 2-9), you are welcome at our meeting on October 30 at 1pm at the church. Since this is our first trip to this area, it’s for adults only, although we are open to considering teens if a guardian is traveling with them. Come for some lunch and with questions!

Thankfulness Tea: Sun. 11/6, 3:30-5pm & Sat. 11/12, 7:30-9pm
Gerry Vogt is hosting a tea at her house (4105 Mocha Tr Austin 78728) as an opportunity for the women of Servant Church to get to know each other better! We are thankful you are part of the church and want to help everyone feel more connected. Tea and desserts will be served along with wonderful conversation and lots of hugs! There is a Parents’ Night Out on November 12 during the tea, so it’s a perfect opportunity for those who need childcare. Please RSVP to Gerry Vogt: vogt.gerry@gmail.com or 714-932-6882.

“Servant Church Aspires” Financial Series
Each Sunday from October 30 to November 13, we will be giving thanks for all the generosity that has brought Servant Church so far in our 6 years, and dreaming together about what God can do as we share our gifts together. Please check out this survey and talk to Dusty Harshman, representative on vision and finance teams, if you have questions. Look for information on Servant Church’s 2017 budget, and ways to submit your family’s 2017 “estimate of giving” – coming soon!

Volunteer Work Day: Sat. 12/10, 7am-2pm
Servant Church is blessed to have our beautiful building, so we’ll work together to maintain it at our first ever Volunteer Work Day. Ross the Facilities Manager will put together a list of to-do’s, and we’ll knock out as many items as possible. Then look for more volunteers every three months for ongoing care of our church.

Some jobs will include cleaning out closets, hanging art, landscaping, and touch up paint. No experience needed! Bring your work gloves and tool boxes, and email Ross to let him know you’re in.

Evensong with Holy Communion: Sundays in Advent, 5:30-6ish
Join us on Sunday evenings in Advent for a new Servant Church worship gathering.

Understanding the Bible Series: Sundays 10/16-11/20
